What Is MSBI – Microsoft Business Intelligence?

MSBI Suite

MSBI stands for Microsoft Business Intelligence. MSBI is a powerful suite and is composed of tools which helps in providing best solutions for Business Intelligence and Data Mining Queries. MSBI empower users to gain access to accurate and up-to-date information for better decision making in an organization. This tool uses Visual studio along with SQL server and offers different tools for different processes which are required in Business Intelligence (BI) solutions.

MSBI is divided into 3 categories:-

  1. SSIS SQL Server Integration Services – Integration tool.
  2. SSAS SQL Server Analytical Services -Analysis tool.
  3. SSRS SQL Server Reporting Services – Reporting tool.

“A visual always help better to understand any concept.”  Below Diagram broadly defines “Microsoft Business Intelligence (MSBI)”.

MSBI Components

Example showing Why MSBI?

Let’s understand this picture by taking an example of an organization. Let’s take the example :- Calvin Klein (CK). We have outlets of Calvin Klein (CK) in most parts of India. Every outlet stores their customer data in their respective database and it’s not mandatory that every outlet is using the same database. Some outlets may have Sybase as their database, some might be using oracle or some stores prefer storing their data in simple text files.

Before proceeding ahead with our explanation, we should know “what OLTP is”? It stands for Online Transaction Processing. These are basically the online transactions (Insert, Update, Delete) performed on database at every outlet by the customer.

After storing daily data of the customers who visited Calvin Klein outlet at different stores, the data is then integrated and saved it in a centralized database. This is done with the help of OLTP component of MS SQL Server. Integration means merging of data from different data stores (i.e. it may be a flat file, Excel sheets, Sybase, Oracle, etc.), refreshing data in data warehouses and to cleanse data (e.g. -Date format may be different for different outlet’s database, so same format is made to make it even) before loading to remove errors. Now, you must be clear with the Integration concept. This is our Phase 1- “SSIS”.

Next step is to analyze the stored centralized data.  This huge data is then divided into Data Marts on which analytic process is carried on. Analysis services use OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) component and data mining capabilities. It allows to build multi-dimensional structures called CUBES to pre calculate and store complex aggregations, and also to build mining models to perform data analysis which helps to identify valuable information like what are the recent trends, patterns, dislikes of customers. Business analyst then perform data mining function on multi dimensional cube structure to look data from different perspectives. Multi Dimensional analysis of huge data completes the Phase 2- “SSAS”.

Now, the only thing left is to represent this analysis graphically so that an organization (Calvin Klein) can  make effective decision to enhance their revenue, gain maximum profit and to reduce time wastage. So, this is done in forms of Reports, Scorecards, Plans, Dashboards, Excel workbooks, etc. This data reports will tell the organization what is the revenue of Calvin Klein in specific time at specific place, where they captured the market, in which part they are lacking and needs to boost up and many other things which end users wish to look into. This reporting is done with a tool SQL Server Reporting Services and completes  Phase 3 – “SSRS”.

This completes our diagram and i hope that you are now clear with the components of MSBI. We will get into the core in our later tutorials of MSBI. Do post your precious comments.

    Keep doing the great job.
I would like to know what is the scope of MSBI in the market now.
I heard its overtaking Cognos and informatica, since this is economic than the other tools.
    Need you thoughts on this.

    • Hey Som,
Thanks a lot for appreciating our work and motivating us with such a good comment.
Yes, MSBI is booming due its performance and economical features as IBM Cognos and Informatica are very costly tool. Also, MSBI suite contains all the three pats – SSIS for Integration, SSAS for Analysis and SSRS for Reporting Services.
But i would suggest to go with open source tools these days as they are free and provides good features. Like Jaspersoft – An open source tool for Reporting.

wow… I am an assistant manager in pharma company. I don’t have much knowledge on software side. I just got interest to learn software courses only because of great explanation.

Can you suggest me some software courses which will be useful for me in analytical R&D labs..?

    • Hi Suresh,
I am glad you read my post and showed interest in Software for Analytic.
There is a famous proverb – “To Succeed in Business, Be in Business”.
Software’s help in many ways and Health Industries are using them to grow their business manifold. Some Software’s are free, some are not.
We can divide the whole scenario into 3 Parts –
      1. Collecting heterogeneous Data – Integration.
      2. Analyze the Data warehouse which stores historical data – Analysis.
      3. Create reports based on the Analyzed data – Reporting.

      A. Software’s for Integration – SSIS (http://www.phpring.com/category/ssis-tutorials), Ab-initio, Excel Power Pivot, DMexpress, etc.
      B. Software’s for Analysis – SSAS, Teradata, Oracle, Hyperion, etc.
      C. Software’s for Reporting – SSRS(http://www.phpring.com/category/ssrs-tutorials), Excel Power View, Tableau, Cognos TM1, Jaspersoft, etc.

For you I would recommend, Excel 2013 Power Pivot (For Analysis) and Power View (For Reporting).

Very nice and understandable explanation ……….. but can u say 1 more thing if i learn msbi then i vl get complete knowledge on sql ???????????????? and can i get a job if i learn MSBI? if i get what kind of job it vl b – Database administrator or some thing else plz answer me bro?????????????????????????????????

    • Hello Irshad,
Aaah !! Awesomo to see such an enthusiasm to learn new things. Go Reading more !!!
MSBI – is a Business Intelligence tool and complete suite is composed of SSIS for Integration of various data sources, SSAS for Analysis on the integrated data i.e Data warehouse and SSRS for Reporting of Analysed data.
You can see we are dealing with DATA here in all the 3 modules. That is the reason of using SQL Server here as a database.
SSAS – It requires expertise and very soon we will start posting on this.
      SSRS http://www.phpring.com/category/ssrs-tutorials/
Regarding SQL knowledge – It will be handy if you want to learn MSBI (if NO knowledge than also you can learn it, as Microsoft tools are Drag and Drop).
Regarding MSBI Jobs – Scope of BI is very much as this era is of Analytics,Big data, etc and everyone wants an Intelligent business. We all look for anlaytics for better decision making to reduce risks and increase revenue.
SQL and MSBI are 2 different branches-
SQL Server knowledge will lead you to Database Administrator. You can check 70-461, 70-462 certification for SQL developer, if interested in database.
MSBI knowledge will lead you to BI developer. You can look at 70-463 certification to be a BI developer on Microsoft website, if interested in Business Intelligence and Data warehousing field. This is the link u can follow – https://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/mcse-sql-business-intelligence.aspx

I have one plus experience in oracle retail. I quit my job and in bed rest. I want to start my career once again, but in a planned manner. Does choosing msbi can I get exposure.., how it going to be..,
How much of experience we should have?

    • Hi syam,

You will find openings for 3+ years

    • Hi Sham,
Kindly share your resume @ chander.sharma007@gmail.com. I can refer you for requirements in retail.
      Regarding MSBI – Great scope now-a-days !!! 🙂
Experience – 1-2 years plus will work.
Usially we have good and fast tools than SSIS/SSAS/SSRS in market. But, clients are preferring MSBI over other tools because of cost effictiveness as they will get 3 technologies i.e. Integration, Analysis and Reporting in 1 tool.
So, Get well soon and PhpRing wishes you all the good luck for future.
      Keep reading and Sharing 🙂

hi i m 2011 passed out,i have less than one year experience in manual testing, then i quit my job. it was almost 2 years over….now, again i want to start my career i dont want to go with testing…so planned to join a course….which is good platform to get a job MSBI Or Android??i m not a good programmer.

    • Hey Priya,

As per my knowledge. I would suggest MSBI rather than Android. Any BI has bright future always.

    • Hi Priya,
I can understand people ususally get bored of doing testing sometimes. 🙂
So, you again want to pursue in IT field. PhpRing wishes you all the best for this new phase.
MSBI – Microsft product – Business Intelligence tool.
Android – Google – Application development.
These days both the technologies are rocking and are in demand. Choosing out of these 2 will depend on your interet.
      Why MSBI ?
      – Interest in data warehousing, data integration, data analysis and reporting services.
      – Needs low to high database knowledge.
MSBI provides all drag and drop options. So, you can learn easily how the tool works and Certification will add weight to your profile.
      Why Androis?
      – Interest in application design and build.
      – Needs coding (I hate coding that’s why enjoying MSBI 🙂 !!! )
Android comes withadt i.e. Android Development Kit whichj gives you drag and drop feel.

Concentrate and Medidate and then choose the field according to your interset. My suggestion for you will be to go with MSBI as it is required in big companies whereas Android is not that much required. I hope this will help you in aligning your career. Post us back if you still have doubt or appreciation is always acknowledged by us 😉

I need some valuble and important suggestion from you.. I will be thankful for this.
I completed my bachelor of computer application in sep 2014 and due to some of my personal problem could not carry my further study. In february 2015, I have got job in a NON-IT company as a IT- trainee. this company uses DOTNET as front end and SQL server as back end. because I don’t know DOTNET that’s why I always works on SQL server(actually I dint study SQL server in B.C.A, but I have a knowledge of pl/sql oracle), not so much but works. like creating database, managing biometric databse etc.
Actually I am little confuse that which field should I choose for my growth and future value. should I learn DOTNET or SQL server with msbi.

    Plz suggest

    • I deeply appreciate you for taking out time to provide us positive feedback for the hard work we put in here to share knowledge with other passionate people like you.
MSBI is a very good tool because it is a Microsoft product which gives a great User Interface. Also, it is a package of 3 tools in 1 – Integration (SSIS) plus Analysis (SSAS) plus Reporting (SSRS) whereas other tools are specifically either used for Integration like Informatica, Abnitio, DMExpress, etc or used for Analysis only or for Reporting like Tableau, Qlikview, etc.
MSBI is a good tool to learn and scope is also very much good in South India but If you really want to learn a new technology then I will suggest you to go with Hadoop – Because Hadoop is a next Big thing and all companies in near future will shift to Hadoop. It will require little or no Java experience with basic Unix commands like copy, move, delete, create, etc. You will really get a good package with Hadoop certification in hand.
I hope my reply will help in making the picture clear. If still in doubt, Ask us anytime !!! Enjoy
